Brian in Torfaen

Brian MoylanBrian Moylan is a team leader for Torfaen’s Refuse Drivers. The politics of the Assembly and Europe has had an impact “big time” on his working life from waste policy to recycling initiatives.

Coming to the public question time event in Cwmbran was a new experience for him and it was interesting for him to see the assembled people passionate about politics in Wales and to see the panel confronted and be able to answer questions in an open debating session

He thinks the work of the All Wales Convention is important in enabling people to get involved in an open debate but he thinks it is difficult for someone who has not read a great deal about, to then be expected to have an opinion on it. He heard about the public meeting in Cwmbran on Red Dragon Radio and thought he would come and find out what it was all about.

He thinks targeting schools and getting the young generation involved more should be a priority as their voices are even more important than his for the future in Wales. While he is still not sure that he 100% understands the issues involved as part of the law making debate he is definitely more aware than he was about options for law making in Wales before coming to the meeting.

In general I would prefer to stay with the step by step approach to law-making as from my experience as a Team Leader, I think you and your team learn more as you go along, learning from mistakes, adapting and then moving on. I think the same is true of the Assembly and devolution in general. You need time to adjust to change and I don’t think Wales and the National Assembly are ready for this and judging from the majority of responses at the Cwmbran meeting, I’m not the only one to think that in this part of Wales.
