The All Wales Convention – Take your seat!

The All Wales Convention is looking for four members of the public to join the Committee which will shape the Convention’s programme of work. This is an exciting opportunity for anyone who has an interest in playing a key role in the development of devolution of Wales.

The Convention’s job is to prepare the ground for a possible referendum on full law making powers for the National Assembly. The Executive Committee will need to set the direction for the Convention’s work, and consider a range of issues facing the Convention.

This will include making decisions about how to engage with the public across Wales.

The Convention wants the widest possible cross-section of people to get involved in a debate about the Assembly’s powers now, how they currently work, and about the potential case for giving the Assembly full lawmaking powers.

The Committee will also need to pull together a report on the Convention’s findings, based on what it has been told by the public and other evidence that it has obtained, by the end of 2009.

Four out of the 16 Executive Committee seats are open to the public and the Convention is urging people from all backgrounds and from all parts of Wales to apply. The Committee needs people from all walks of life, with a wide range of talents and experience who can reflect Wales in the 21st Century.

Sir Emyr Jones Parry, Chair of the Convention said:

I am appealing for members of public to step up and serve on the Convention. The chosen four will have the opportunity to be part of an exciting process, from stimulating the debate across Wales, to analysing what we hear from the Welsh public, and using their judgment to ensure that the report we deliver at the end of the day covers all aspects of our remit.

Once we have the Committee in place, we will be looking to communicate widely with everyone who has an interest in the work of the Convention.

While the Committee will set the direction of the Convention’s work, the Convention is about everyone who wants to participate in it – and we will be eager to hear the views of all individuals and groups who have something to say about how devolution has affected them, and what they would like to see happening in the future.

Members of the public who want to serve on the Convention should request an application pack by visiting www.allwalesconvention.org, emailing publicappointments@wales.gsi.gov.uk or telephoning (029) 2082 3799.
