Anglesey Public Event - 26 February 2009

Four panellists from different sectors were involved in the debate which was chaired by local journalist and broadcaster, Vaughan Hughes.

Members of the panel included:

• Einir Young, Head of Sustainable Development at Bangor University;
• David Lea-Wilson from Halen Mon; and
• the Rev Hywel Meredydd Davies of Menter Mon.

Also on the panel was Sir Emyr Jones Parry, Chair of the Convention, who was able to provide an overview of the Convention’s aims, and the current law-making powers of the National Assembly for Wales.

During the event, attendees were invited to ask questions to panel members, and also given a chance to respond to the answers.  There was no shortage of questions from the audience, resulting in a lively debate.

Attendees were also given interactive voting pads to record their responses to key questions.  Results of group vote indicated that 96 per cent of people indicated they would vote if there was a referendum on law-making powers. 

Over 80 per cent of people indicated that they were in favour of further law making powers for the National Assembly, rather than keeping the current situation.

Welcoming over 70 attendees to the debate to Newborough’s newly refurbished Youth Centre, Eglws Bach Community Hall, was local Councillor Peter Rogers.

A team of staff and Members of the Convention’s Executive Committee mingled with guests over a cup of tea following the event.
