Bridgend Public Event, McArthur Glen, 15 January 2009

Shopping for opinions.

Date of Event: 15/01/2009

Meryl Gravell interviewing at McArthur GlenMembers of the All Wales Convention were at Bridgend’s McArthur Glen Designer Outlet on Thursday January 15 shopping for feedback on the future of devolution in Wales.  Councillor Meryl Gravell, Reverend Aled Edwards, Paul Valerio and Paul O’Shea were there to inform members of the public on the Assembly’s current law-making powers and to engage opinion on whether the time was right or not for the Assembly to receive more devolved powers from Westminster.

The public consultation period, launched in Port Talbot’s Seaside Social and Labour Club on Wednesday January 14, will run until August 2009. It will then be up to the All Wales Convention, made up of 16 Executive Committee members and chairman Sir Emyr Jones Parry, to prepare a comprehensive report of its findings by the end of the year.

Councillor Meryl Gravell, who represents the Wales Local Government Association on the All Wales Convention Executive Committee, said:

We’ve had an excellent response from the shoppers at McArthur Glen Designer Outlet with over 200 people visiting the All Wales Convention roadshow trailer.  It was a real pleasure to speak to people and get their views on what the National Assembly means to them.

Sir Emyr Jones Parry, Chair of the All Wales Convention, added:

The All Wales Convention is all about reaching local people in communities throughout Wales. We want to hear people’s views of the National Assembly for Wales; to listen and collect feedback. Whether their views are positive or negative, they’re both equally important to us.

I’d like to encourage everyone who wants to get informed and get engaged in the debate about the Assembly’s future law-making powers to do so now. This is a unique one-off opportunity for public debate and comment and we want to hear from as many people as possible before August.
